Advertising is Confusing!

What if you decided to finally do it right…and make an impact with your local advertising efforts?

What would you do? Where would you start?

If you look online, you have a ton of choices. Choices that provide no help in “un-confusing” you. Yuck! How could you ever get a feel for one of those advertising companies? You really couldn’t from their online presence. Their websites seem to be full of fluff and “creativity”. I never see any real proof from them that they know how to make local advertising work.

Now, if you stumble across my blog, you may be able to look at a few posts I’ve written…and make an informed decision. You could even listen to some of my sample radio spots. You would either think I’m a crackpot, or you’d be given enough confidence to contact me. But you’d have more than enough information to make that decision. Now let’s get started un-confusing you regarding your advertising.

Radio advertising works…

But first it depends on whether you’re committed to a genuine marketing effort. If you’re looking for the magic potion of advertising results, keep looking. And good luck. If you’re interested in finally figuring out what works and WHY it works, I think you’re in the right spot.

I recently met with a fairly new radio client. There were 3 people from the company ready to answer my questions. I was digging for some new info for future radio ads. One question I asked was, “Is there anything you DO that surprises your customers?” They gave me some great information. Then, we talked for a few more minutes…and the store manager said, “Sorry to go back to that ‘what surprises our customers’ question, but I just thought of something else.” I told him that we could spend the whole meeting on that topic because in your radio ads we need to surprise the listening audience. We need to tell them things they don’t expect to hear. Because otherwise, they’ll tune out. Don’t use advertising to tell people things they already know, surprise them. That’s what will make your radio work better. I heard a few of  them say out loud, “That makes sense.”

THAT was something they had never heard before. In the past, they had been puked on with words, phrases, and industry jargon like, Top of Mind, Branding, Awareness, Demographics, Reach, Targeting, Cost per Thousand, Cume, Dayparts, Circulation, Impressions, etc. etc. Nobody had ever told them that what you actually SAY in your advertising matters. Nobody had ever told them about what kinds of things their “target” might want to hear. Nobody had ever told them that it wasn’t about THEM…it was about how they can surprise, delight, and help someone else – their future customer.

Everyone walked away from the meeting feeling extra confident that we were on the right track. That their ad dollars were being invested wisely.

The only reason advertising might be confusing to you is because nobody has ever really explained it right (or maybe most ad people don’t know).

I don’t sell my clients; I lead them to discover the truth in advertising. I want you to understand what we’re going to do and why it’s going to work before you ever invest a dime.

Give me a shout and let’s talk. Afterwards, advertising won’t be so confusing for you.

Have a great day!

Radio Advertising Advice for Beginners

Those who have never advertised on the radio…but are considering it…have questions.

Beginner (Studying)

But if you ask the wrong person those questions, you’ll get a big bag of answers that have nothing to do with making your advertising actually work. You want your radio ads to work, right?

You might be told about gross rating points or cost per thousand. But don’t get hung up on that. That still has very little to do with making your advertising work. If you’re not familiar with the radio stations in your area…or the size and estimated “listenership” of your local radio stations…ask around.

You might also get pounded with more information than you care to…about station demographics. Again, don’t obsess over this. There’s not one radio station who “owns” a particular group of listeners. Nobody “owns” women, age 25 to 54! You’d be amazed at which stations people listen to.

Most advertising salespeople won’t talk to you about what it takes for advertising to be effective. They’ll sell you on “the bling”, or their demographics, or show you a snappy “ad package” (loaded with tons of bonus value that isn’t really that valuable), or Powerpoint you to death with graphs, charts, and statistics.

If you find someone who talks to you about what your ad / commercial / message actually communicates to the public…then you’re on the right track. Because even if you advertise with the biggest, “baddest”, advertising medium in Sioux Falls, it’s still going to be a waste of money if you’re not saying anything that will help persuade someone to do business with YOU instead of your competition.

“The advertising message” and the “strategy” is what should be given the lion’s share of attention. And that’s what I specialize in. I’m not a great salesperson – I just love creating advertising that helps local business owners in Sioux Falls take a bigger slice of the market. If I don’t think I can help you…I’ll tell you. But chances are, after we talk a time or two…I’m going to start coming up with ideas and angles that you’ve never considered. These will be ideas to get you noticed, attract new customers to you, and get you towards the top of the short list of businesses that people will think of FIRST when they’re considering buying what you sell.

You want solid advice about advertising. You want to know that your advertising dollars are invested well. It all starts by not obsessing over things like demographics and other numbers that are easily twisted. Of course, some of that information is important to a certain degree, but not to the level that you’d think. Focus first on what you’ll say to your prospects.

If you’re a plumber or a furniture store or a car dealer…and you had someone on the phone or face to face…would you feel comfortable reading them your radio script? Doubtful. Your advertising needs a human factor to it. When you stop treating people like sheep in your advertising, they’ll respond better to your ads. People want to feel they can trust you before they do business with you. And a “typical” advertisement that you’re used to…isn’t going to do that.

Let’s make friends with some new people…and then watch how many of them decide to buy from you.

Have a great day!

I want to target people age 25 to 45

Want to know the secret of successful advertising? Read on.

Instead of telling your advertising person that you’d like to target people, age 25 to 45, consider this…

It’s not about the age of the person. It’s about:

The phase of life they’re in

The problems they have

The values they have

The things they’re passionate about

The things that irritate them

The emotion they feel when they think about your product or service

Trying to predict which advertising mediums can deliver 32-year-olds to you is a losing battle. And the advertising representative that says, “Yes, we have the perfect demographic for you” is most likely full of it. Unless it’s the direct mail company. They can give you a list of the exact demographics you want. But I’ll direct you back to the list. It’s not about age, it’s about connecting with your ideal prospect. “Connecting” meaning – talking to them about the things they really care about.

So, what’s the SECRET to attracting the new customers you seek? Share with them what you stand for…and you’ll attract those like-minded people. They’ll be happy to buy your product or service because of the “connection” they feel to you. They’ll feel that you understand them and that you’re “on their side”.

Have a great day!

I write ads, prepare radio schedules, create strategies for your ads (so you can stand out from your competition), give online and other marketing advice, and will keep your advertising fresh and new. I hear a lot of ads that air for 6 months or more before they’re changed out. That’s way way too long…and it’s not doing you any good. You have a lot of things you can share with the public that will help you become a trusted resource to them. Then they BUY. Let’s do that!
